Bourg St Maurice at the head of the Tarentaise valley, is a traditional French town with attractive architecture and a wealth of great restaurants, shops and markets which are open all year.
It is linked directly to the Les Arcs domain, part of one of the world's largest ski areas, Paradiski, with a modern funicular railway which takes just 7 minutes to arrive at Arc 1600 and directly onto the slopes and 425km of terrain catering for absolutely all ability levels. Pistes continue for miles right across to the double-decker Vanoise Express cable car over to La Plagne.
In addition to fabulous skiing available in the winter season, or the stunning scenery surrounding in the summer, enjoy meadows full of spring flowers or mountains clothed in autumn foliage. The colours of the trees in October can rival any in new England!
For adrenelin junkies the summer mountain biking opportunities are famous with 180 km of trails and a vertical drop of nearly 2 km from the highest lift to the valley floor. There are plenty of stunning routes for road cycling including the Tour de France route passing through Bourg to Le Grand Bornand plus whitewater activities for all levels on the Isère.
Alternatively, enjoy a tranquil holiday visiting local crafts places and traditional villages or strolling along the tree covered walk bordering the river.
The gorgeous Vanoise national park is close by with fabulous walking around the glaciers and great opportunities to spot alpine animals and birds, including France's largest colony of ibex, marmots and 20 breeding pairs of golden eagles.
Access to the town is easy with the Eurostar arriving direct into the town or there are fast roads direct to the town with no windy mountain roads to negotiate.
